I could not stop laughing when I saw this ajushi (Korean for “old man”) on the subway. This man was probably about 60 years old and was passed out with his head down. You see this in Korea everywhere – Koreans who are clueless what the text means in English, but because it’s English, they wear it. Some of the most random stuff. This was the funniest one I’ve seen so far though.

It was sort of a bold move taking a pic of this guy, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t.

Better angle of the graphic on the hat.

Yet, another attraction at COEX Mall in Seoul. I was walking back to the subway when I noticed this lady screaming past me on her scooter…. a few minutes later, she came whizzing back but this time I noticed a sweeper in front of her scooter along with other cleaning supplies and gear in the back. I really admire the fact that she is able to work with the aid of technology and Korean ingenuity.

Video of the cleaning lady at COEX. Notice the admirable shot she made tossing the bottle into the garbage can without getting out of the scooter (behold, the power of the ajuma). I actually had to run despite a few laughs from strangers to videotape her in action. After noticing she was being taped at the end of her run, she politely greeted me and smiled. What a sweet lady! This has to be one of my favorite moments in Korea thus far.

Definition of AJUMA: An ajuma is a middle-aged Korean woman who has already had kids. It is said this woman needed seemingly supernatural powers to raise Korean children. Throughout Korea, there is an ongoing joke making fun of an ajuma’s super-powers, despite her unassuming figure. Basically, she could be an X-Men character.

Here are some ajuma facts:

-In Korea, there are three types of people – man, woman, and ajuma

-If there was a nuclear bomb that destroyed the entire planet, the only lifeforms to survive are cockroaches and ajuma

-If a seat becomes available in a crowded subway, an ajuma has the ability to dart to the seat like a lightning bolt

-If there is only one item remaining in a store sale, an ajuma uses her super-powers to obtain it by jumping amazing heights and running across the store like a super-being.

-There are popular “Gag” comedy shows on Korean television, with young actors dressing in costumes and acting ridiculously making fun of ajumas

Above is a video I had to take of an “ajuma” I spotted demonstrating her superhuman powers. She was walking around the subway tunnels unaffected by the huge load on top of her head as she carried another large bag with her left hand.
