26 Aug 2009Finally. I thought it would never happen. I can use my iPhone in Korea.
A company called Interbro (branded as Yota in Korea) has produced a product called an “egg” that works seamlessly with the KTF WiBro network. It essentially turns your WiMAX connection from your Korean mobile carrier into a WIFI hotspot. You can get speeds up to 4 megabits per second (incredible!), even in the subway in Seoul. KT offers 30 gigabytes of data transfer per month for $20.
This means you can actually use your iPod Touch or any generation iPhone from Apple with a WiMax service here in Korea. Its still not the same iPhone 100%, but this allows you to take advantage of the many features of the iPhone. If you have an iPod Touch, you’re basically putting it on steroids with a high speed connection. Simply download the Skype App for your iPhone and pay for a WiMAX account and you could actually eliminate your mobile phone bill in Korea. Pretty amazing.
I wonder if this WiMAX Egg is the “iPhone” in Korea they’ve been talking about. We’ll see.
The diagram below explains how it works.
Kimchi Soup is a blog journal managed by a Korean-American-Jewish adoptee (this is not a joke). Its sole purpose is to document the adventures of the author's return to Korea and to update his family and friends.
The author of this blog journal was adopted form Korea at the age of 6. He was adopted and raised by a Jewish-American family (not a joke). The purpose of his extended return trip to Korea is to learn more about his birth-family history, learn the Korean language, and immerse himself in daily Korean life to fully experience true Korean culture.

Will I be able to get this as a white American working in Korea as an English teacher with an alien registration card? I went into some KT shops, but they hadn’t heard of the egg. I was told on a forum that only some KT shops have the egg.

Yes, you should be able to. However, if you are not a Korean citizen, you are limited to just one mobile phone in Korea. In addition, you might be obligated to a large deposit (200,000 – 300,000 won) for a new phone. For the egg, I believe you have to buy that product outright – equates to about $200 USD.
I know the egg is available because I saw a functioning egg with my personal eyes in a taxi in Seoul. I even checked my iPhone to see if the WIFI network was available on my iPhone, and it was.
I will investigate further to see where you can buy the WiMAX egg. Once I find out, I will have a dedicated post on Kimchi Soup.
