Zzang Fitness in Korea

One of my goals during my stay in Korea is to exercise regularly in addition to maintaining a healthy diet. I joined ZZang Fitness, a fitness center near my apartment.  Gyms in Korea are different in a number of ways from fitness centers in the US -

-they all have sauna’s, people actually take naps on the floor in the saunas. People die every year from being overheated or heart attacks while in the sauna, but this doesn’t seem to phaze their popularity

-if you pay cash, you get a 15% discount in your monthly membership fee. If you pay for 3 months ahead of time, you get a bigger discount

-you need to have separate shoes for the gym. You cannot wear athletic shoes that you’ve worn outside in the gym. Many patrons wear athletic shoes to the gym and change into their indoor gym shoes

-everyone must wear the provided uniforms. The gym washes both top and bottom of your outfit after every use. Very convenient since you don’t ever need to worry about bringing gym clothes.  Can be a problem if you have a phobia of wearing clothes previously worn by someone else

-all the weights are in kilograms!

Other than that, the gym is very similar to that of any other in America.

Zzang fitness is located on the 8th floor of a commercial building. Great views of the city. The staff is really, really, nice and friendly.

Here’s a few pictures……

They do your laundry that’s awesome! What is their reasoning behind the uniforms? Is it more expensive then US fitness clubs?

Beth!
It really is nice since you would have another whole load of laundry every week otherwise.

Not exactly sure the reason for the uniforms. Maybe to keep people from wearing outrageous outfits to the gym. Maybe purely for the convenience of the patrons, although I got yelled at for working out with my Adidas pants the other day.

The membership fee is $60,000 Korean won per month when paying cash ($70,000/month with credit card), or $140,000 Korean won for 3 months paying cash. Today, $1 dollar gets you approximately $1,340 Korean won. I opted for the $140,000 fee for 3 months, so, I’m paying about $35/month. To answer your question, its a about the same.

Sweet, I expect you to look more huge in each picture for the rest of the year.

The uniform idea is interesting – it would at least solve the problem of people who work out in distractingly distasteful outfits. However, it’s too bad they don’t have sleeveless tops. It must be hard not to rip the sleeves when you do curls.

Do you have the url for Zzang? I may be moving to Korea in the next 6 months and am having trouble finding a way to the fitness facility’s website. Thanks!
